COURT HOUSE — Cape May County’s Childhood Drinking Coalition, a community initiative of Cape Assist, will be launching Project Sticker Shock on Dec. 2, at Joe Canals in Rio Grande.
The bright green stickers read “ Keep It Legal: providing alcohol to those under age 21 is illegal, up to six months jail time, $1000 fine.”
Local Peer Leaders from Cape May Technical High School, Adult Coalition Members and the Middle Township Police Department will be placing the stickers on multi-packs of alcoholic beverages and on paper bags used at the liquor store.
Underage drinking is not a minor problem. Underage drinking is an adult problem. A recent American Medical Association poll showed that adults are the most common source of alcohol for teens.
The goal of the Sticker Shock Project is to discourage adults and older peers (those who are 21 and older) from providing alcohol to minors.
Preventing underage drinking is a public health issue. It is everyone’s responsibility. The next meeting of the Childhood Drinking Coalition will be held on Tues., Dec.14, at 9 a.m.
