Cape May County 4-H Fair Schedule of Events

THURSDAY, JULY 21, 2016
GRAND OPENING PARADE: 4:00 p.m.
Kick off for the Official Grand Opening. The Parade begins at the rear of the Fairgrounds. Boy Scout color guard, entertainment and 4-H members will all proceed around Betty Jean Lane for viewing by fairgoers. Music by Cape May County String Band. Parade will end at the main stage.
GRAND OPENING CEREMONIES: Following Opening Parade
Official opening of the festivities takes place at the Main Stage and at the Flagpole on the Fairgrounds. Features flag-raising, special guests, presentations and patriotic music.
MR. BOUNCE INFLATABLES: Noon to 9:00 p.m.
Enjoy the fair’s Mr. Bounce Inflatables, 6 awesome bouncy houses featuring a pirate ship, obstacle course, a huge water slide, a basketball court and a slippy-slide. Fun for kids and adults alike!
NEW! KNOCKER BALLS: Noon to 9:00 p.m.
A brand new exciting challenge for fair visitors. Gather your friends and climb into life size plastic spheres to knock, bang and slam into each other around the Knocker Ball arena. Prepare for fun! Next to the Rock Climbing Wall.
CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY AREA: Noon to 8:00 p.m. / Next To Lockwood 4-H Youth Center
Just for our youngest visitors, a unique interactive series of activities. In addition to longtime favorites, apple picking, egg gathering and potato digging, there will be pedal tractor races, a marine-life touch tank, the touch, taste and smell Irma McVey Memorial Herb Garden, and other educational activities geared for young visitors to explore and engage their senses. Be sure to stop by the Silly Selfies photo booth where kids can dress up with miniature horse Willow and strike a funny pose.
SCALES & TAILS 4-H HERPETOLOGY EXHIBIT: Noon to 9:00 p.m. / Lockwood 4-H Youth Center
Cape May County’s reptile and herpetology 4-H club will showcase their herp, reptile, arachnid and amphibian
projects. The projects will be on display during all open hours of the fair.
EXHIBITS & VENDORS: Noon to 9:00 p.m.
4-H youth and adult project entries on display in the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center (front of the Fairgrounds) featuring: foods, clothing, crafts, woodworking, marine science, vegetables, plants, artwork and more. Open to the public from Noon to 9 PM. Also open throughout the Fairgrounds are many educational and non-profit exhibitors, as well as commercial vendors.
MAKER SPACE– BIGGER & BETTER: Noon to 9:00 p.m. / Lockwood 4-H Youth Center
One of last year’s most popular fair activities, Maker Space is much larger this year, with more exciting technology, robots and hands-on activities for all ages. Thanks to the CMC Library’s Learning Center and Fuzzy Logic 4-H Robotics Club for bringing this awesome activity to the 4-H Fair.
NEW! RUTGERS MASTER GARDENER MINI TALK: 1:30-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-4:30 p.m. / Irma’s Herb Garden
“Making Herb Butter” with Master Gardener Brenda Church. Learn the art of using different herbs from the garden to make tasty compound butters.
FARM MARKET: 3:00-7:00 p.m.
Locally grown, organic Jersey Fresh produce and organic lavender right at our 4-H Fair. Stock up on summer’s bounty!
CHICKEN BBQ: From 5:00 p.m. ‘til it’s gone’
A very popular tradition at the Fair! The BBQ is sponsored by the Cape May County Board of Agriculture, and features delicious BBQ chicken, farm fresh vegetables, chips, cranberry sauce, roll and butter, beverage and dessert. Served by volunteers and local dignitaries. Take-out also available. Tickets available on the Fairgrounds from 4:00 p.m. on in the Chicken BBQ Ticket Booth. $12.50 adults; children (12 and under) $7.00.
LIVESTOCK EVENTS:
4-H Goat Showmanship and Judging: 2:00 p.m. / Coover Livestock Pavilion
4-H members will show an interesting variety of goat breeds for a score of good, very good or excellent (Danish Scoring System). The 4-H’ers are also judged on their showmanship ability.
4-H Livestock Auction: 6:30 p.m. / Livestock Barn
Project market lambs and hogs are sold to the highest bidder. A unique opportunity to fill your freezer with high quality, humanely and locally raised meat – also great to split with a friend or donate to a worthwhile charity! Bidders welcome!
EQUINE EVENTS:
Showmanship & Grooming and Halter Day: 9:00 a.m. on throughout the afternoon/Horse Show Arena (rear of fairgrounds)
Horse shows where 4-H horse club members demonstrate their in-hand showmanship skills and exhibit their horses’ conformation, competing for the best model horses. The day also includes the Versatility Division in the afternoon, testing horse and rider skills in tough English and Western competition to determine the most versatile horse and rider combination.
Evening Equine Events: Following Livestock Auction in the Horse Show arena at rear of Fairgrounds.
Moonlight Riders 4-H Drill Team Exhibition:
Cape May County’s 4-H mounted drill team will unveil their exciting new routine of choreographed riding set to music. This will be the team’s 14th year of performances.
Graduating Seniors Exhibition Class:
This equine event honors our graduating high school seniors and youth members in their final year of 4-H.
Fancy & Funny Equine Costume Classes:
Elaborate and hilarious costume displays featuring 4-H horse club members and their project animals.
MAIN STAGE ENTERTAINMENT:
Cape May County String Band: 5:30 p.m.
Strut your stuff or tap your toes to this unique style of music from our favorite local string band.
The Calamity Janes: 6:30 p.m.
A musical trio featuring 100% live music: no processed or pre-recorded music. Songs include the Beatles, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, John Cougar Mellencamp and many more!
Church Street Band: 7:15 p.m.
Enjoy spiritual rock music by talented up and comers.
Dean Dunlevy: 8:15 p.m.
This talented young, local musician, member of the Drive the Bus band, will entertain young and old alike!

MIKE STEIDLEY MOUNTAIN BIKE STUNT SHOW: Noon and 5:00 p.m.
Back by popular demand, don’t miss 2 daredevil performances by 12x National Champion and Professional Trials, Freeride and Stunt Rider Mike Steidley. Steidley has performed his Mountain Bike Stunt Show in 23 different countries, showcasing his captivating skills to thousands. Steidley will give two performances each day Friday and Saturday.
SCALES & TAILS HERPETOLOGY SHOW & EXHIBIT: 1:00 P.M. Show/ Lockwood 4-H Youth Center
Cape May County’s reptile and herpetology 4-H club will showcase their herp, reptile, arachnid and amphibian projects. The projects will be on display during all open hours of the fair.

“Do Butterflies Bite? Butterfly Q & A” with Master Gardener Barbara Douglass. Learn lots of interesting and funny facts on butterflies. Bring your butterfly questions! Irma’s Herb Garden is located near the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center.

EQUINE EVENTS:
English Day: 9:00 a.m. / Horse Show Arena
English horse show featuring jumping and under saddle classes. Includes a Western Go English division, where 4-H members with stock-type horses try their skills at English events in English tack, and exciting Pairs and Teams classes for groups of two and three riders working in tandem. Includes future 4-H’er and leadline participation for young 4-H children.
Parents, Leaders & 4-H Alumni Horse Show Classes: 7:00 p.m.
Six fun classes for 4-H moms, dads, leaders and 4-H alumni. Be sure to check out the friendly and entertaining rivalry in the horse show arena.
LIVESTOCK EVENTS – COOVER PAVILION:
4-H Poultry and Waterfowl Showmanship and Judging: 10:00 a.m. / Livestock Barn
A qualified judge evaluates 4-H project members’ many different breeds of chickens, turkeys and ducks for breed characteristics and condition. Members’ showmanship abilities will also be judged.
FUN LIVESTOCK EVENTS – COOVER PAVILION:
2:00 p.m. Runner Duck Races
3:00 p.m. Parent/Leader/ Alumni Showmanship Fun Classes
4-H Rabbit & Cavy Showmanship and Judging: 6:30 p.m. / Coover Livestock Pavilion
Evaluation of 4-H project rabbits made by qualified judge for breed characteristics, conformation and condition. Come see the many breeds of beautiful bunnies!
MAIN STAGE ENTERTAINMENT:
Dance Dynamics: 6:00 p.m.
Don’t miss this performance by talented local dancers!
John Walter Cape Community Band: 6:30 p.m.
Sit back, relax and let the music take you away! This swinging band made up of Cape May County community members is always a popular feature at the Fair!
Dean Dunlevy: 7:15 p.m.
This talented young, local musician, member of the band Drive the Bus, will entertain young and old alike!

4-H COLOR FUN RUN: 8:00 a.m. Registration / 8:30 a.m. Start
Prepare to be blasted with color and fun during this 1 mile and 5k fun run around the 4-H fairgrounds. This event is sponsored by the Communateen 4-H Club. $10 registration fee. Call (609) 465-5115 ext. 605 to preregister. All ages welcome!
CHILDREN’S PET SHOW – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
Registration at 9:00 a.m. / Judging Starts at 10:00 a.m. / LYC Main Stage
Any type of small animal is eligible – no large animals, please. Participant ribbons and trophies awarded. This favorite 4-H Fair event is sponsored by Smeltzer & Sons. Don’t miss the fun!

The 4-H Fair is honored to add this new ceremony to our line-up. Experience American flags retired properly as 4-H youth explain the meaning of the stars and stripes.

4-H HORSE & LIVESTOCK SHOWMANSHIP ROUND ROBIN: 3:00 P.M. / COOVER PAVILION
(Next to horse barns.) This entertaining event is a skills competition featuring the top 4-H Showmanship Grand Champion in each project animal represented at the Fair: horse, hog, goat, sheep, poultry and rabbit. Each competitor must show all six animals according to their species standards. Everyone welcome!

Horse show including all western-style events, such as western pleasure, trail, and reining classes. Includes future 4-H’er and leadline participation for young 4-H children and a unique English Go Western Division where hunter-type horses compete in three western classes under western tack.

Thrilling demo of 4-H members’ skill in western speed events, including barrel racing, pole bending and the flag race.

Singer, songwriter & guitarist. Dan’s own assemblage of his life’s inspirations comes together in a style that melds many genres, including jazz, folk, rock and reggae.
ShoreSyde Duo: 4:00 p.m.
You name it, they play it! This band plays a wide selection of tunes, from Top 40, Rock, Reggae, R&B to Country.
Hamer’s School of Karate: 6:30 p.m.
Martial Arts Demonstration under the direction of Butch Hamer.
PPAWS 4-H Seeing Eye Dog Demonstration: 7:15 p.m.
Presentations by members of P.P.A.W.S. (People and Puppies at Work for Sight) 4-H club. Members of the club will talk about their foster dogs and discuss what life is like for them while raising their project puppies.
4-H CAVALCADE OF WINNERS: 8:00 p.m. / Main Stage
This is the “grand finale” of 4-H Fair activities! Presentation of awards to youth and adults for outstanding project exhibits, displays, as well as to various show winners.
