Cape Hope Seeks Warming Center Volunteers

Graig Stanford

By Press Release

BURLEIGH – The volunteers at Cape Hope are preparing to meet the expectations placed on small municipalities and even smaller volunteer groups, like theirs, that operate through donations only.
According to a release, “Our future works will be done in cooperation with township and county officials combined.  With that in mind, we are planning two events to further community efforts in preparing for the abrupt end to the county voucher system at year’s end.”
Warming center volunteers must have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.  To that end, te group is scheduling CPR training at a warming center volunteer workshop to be held at Cape Community Center, 1159 S. Rt. 9, Court House, Dec. 17 at 5 p.m.
All other municipalities or volunteers are welcome, according to the release.
This newly-implemented idea of municipalities and non-profits operating warming centers will need the attention of the entire community if it is to improve.
Cape Hope also administers “Blessing Bags.” Every other Saturday, the group seeks out those that are most affected, and delivers brochures or directions so that “If you need Help, to Call Us.”
Included would be bare essentials like socks, gloves hats, etc. The group will hold a volunteer night to meet and stuff Blessing Bags at Cape Community Center,1159 S. Rt. 9 Court House, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
Cape Hope’s mission is to improve lives “One at a time.”  Although it continues to maintain this structure on “non-Code Blue” days,” it is charged with keeping a welcoming place as a warming center on those nights “not fit for man, nor beast.”
The group needs volunteers to maintain this new concept.
As a single group, this will quickly drain the small staff. This effort will only work if more people get involved.
