Cape Express Joins Township Plans at Ockie Wisting

By Press Release

RIO GRANDE — Middle Township has achieved another milestone in the development of its newest recreational facility, the Robert “Ockie” Wisting Recreation Complex. The township this week has entered into a lease agreement with Cape Express Soccer Club that would enable the non-profit organization to construct up to six state-of-the-art soccer fields at the site. Cape Express would also be responsible for improvements to some of the complex’s common areas, as well as maintenance of their leased area. The proposed 20-year lease provides an opportunity for extensions and is now subject to review by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection since the Ockie Wisting property is part of the NJDEP’s Green Acres Program.
“We are excited to reach final agreement on this lease with Cape Express,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “This partnership is a key component of our plans and will offer not only first-class recreation opportunities, but also attract large tournaments and the economic impact they will bring.”
Located at the site of the former Fort Apache Campground on Fulling Mill Road, the Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex will be home to a first-of-its-kind freshwater fishing pond with an ADA-compliant pier as well as a bandstand, walking trails, bird viewing areas, a disc golf course, playground, restroom facilities and state-of-the-art soccer fields. This nature-inspired, passive recreational area will add a unique twist to Middle Township’s already impressive recreational facilities.
“The partnership with Cape Express represents the type of innovative thinking that we need in government today to benefit our residents and community,” said Deputy Mayor Dan Lockwood.
The township is currently acquiring the necessary permits for development of the complex. It is anticipated that bids will be prepared shortly with construction to follow in early spring.
“I’m very happy that this project is finally coming to fruition. We look forward to receive final state approval and are eager to get the shovels in the ground,” said Committeeman Michael Clark.
