STONE HARBOR – Strolling musicians performed for a sizable crowd, which gathered Thur., May 24 to observe local history in the making at 9601 Third Avenue.
That event was the unveiling of The Reeds at Shelter Haven sign, a precursor to the edifice that will stand, by 2013, same time, as did two former structures that bore the name Shelter Haven Hotel, until 1961 when a motel by the same name replaced it. Time eventu-ally took its toll on that structure and it, too, was demolished.
The parcel, vacant for many years after the demolition of that last Shelter Haven Motel, had been a source of local speculation. Some hoped it might become borough property used as a park. Others wanted to see it continue as a ratable, since it is one of the landmark properties when visitors enter the borough.
Principals of 100th Street LLC, Dr. John Sprandio and Ed Breen, wore white hard hats, and shared the chore of pulling back a sheet that covered the sign.
The Reeds at Shelter Haven will be, “a new luxury boutique hotel” with 37 rooms over-looking Shelter Haven waterfront. It will feature indoor and outdoor “celebration spaces” for weddings and private parties.
Pilings had previously been driven to help speed the work.
“As shovels hit the ground today, we are celebrating the start of construction of The Reeds at Shelter Haven, and also marking the latest chapter in a century-old tradition that is this beloved resort location,” explained Ron Gorodesky, managing director.
The Reeds plans to offer overnight escapes and getaways, “unique and intimate dining opportunities, impressive multifunctional venues including an indoor restaurant-lounge, expansive patio-deck and outdoor dining area.
In addition, it will have corporate meeting areas and both indoor and outdoor areas for weddings, private and social events.
Joining the 100th Street LLC was Mayor Suzanne Walters and Freeholder Vice Director M. Susan Sheppard.
