NORTH WILDWOOD — The Children’s Fresh Air Home on Surf Avenue will have the front porch removed from the structure this week. After receiving a structural report from MV Engineering, it has been determined that the porch is in extremely poor condition and must be removed. The main structure is solid and plans continue to renovate the Home.
Milt McFalls, president of the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Fresh Air Home said, “The plans for renovation include the replacement of this portion of the building, so we are looking at the removal of the porch as a prelude to phase one of construction. This is a positive direction for our organization.”
Brian Murphy of MV Engineering graciously donated his services to address the immediate issue of the front porch condition and Jimmy Hemmingway of Garden State General Construction is scheduled to do the demolition of the porch at a minimal cost to the organization.
Executive Director Angel Daniels commented, “The estimated cost for this work to be done would have put a large dent in our funds dedicated for construction as well as our ability to continue to serve children as we are. The wonderful support of Pat Malia, construction official for the City of North Wildwood and Mayor Henfey, along with the generosity of Brian Murphy and Jimmy Hemmingway has been paramount in helping us through this emergent issue.”
The Century Campaign aimed towards “Preserving the Exterior and Rebuilding the Interior” is in progress with the goal of beginning renovations in the coming year. The home has stood for over 85 years just a few steps from the ocean and those years of exposure to the moist sea air have taken a major toll.
Prior to the summer of 2006, the decision was made to suspend the summer program until necessary renovations could be made. With the plans for a renovated and restored Fresh Air Home, the structure will be expanded and improved while maintaining the current external façade.
