Wildwoods ‘Unlock’ Beach to Start Summer Season

By Lauren Suit

WILDWOOD – A bright sunny sky, a little breeze and warm weather all made for a perfect day to go fly a kite on the Wildwood beach.
Lucky for kite enthusiasts, officials from five-mile island and the state were on hand to “unlock” the beaches for them on Friday, May 22.
New Jersey Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells joined local officials in kicking off the 2009 summer season at the Wildwoods’ unlocking ceremony.

With the help of three students representing Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, Margaret Mace School, and Crest Memorial Elementary School, official places a large key into the sand and initiated the summer season.
The sky above the ceremony was filled with colorful creations as the 24th Annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival took flight. The kites dipped and twisted in the air along with music provided by the Wildwood High School Band.
After the beach was officially unlocked the elementary school kids got to enjoy the sand and fly their self-made kites for the first time.
