The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor and the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum in Rio Grande have both been named as two top 50 educational attractions in the Northeast according to vacationsmadeeasy.com’s Blog for Lifestyle & Travel.
Founded in 1969 by Herbert Mills (Executive Director, World Wildlife Fund US, 1965-1969), The Wetlands Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering knowledge and appreciation of coastal environments. Its mission is to promote appreciation, understanding and stewardship of wetlands and coastal ecosystems through programs in research, conservation and education. The Wetlands Institute believes that people will value wetlands and coastal ecosystems if they understand how they work and why the health of those systems is so tightly intertwined with our own wellbeing. That belief is the driving force behind all its services. Through programs in conservation, research, education and outreach it employs an interdisciplinary approach to inspire people of all ages to care about the environment and to become environmentally literate and involved citizens.
The Naval Air Station, located at the Cape May Airport, originally served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility in World War II. Today historic hangar #1 serves as a hands-on aviation history museum. Families can enjoy interactive exhibits on flight, the history of the station and its role in WWII and beyond and explore the various aircraft on display. Education is a key ingredient in the mixture of programs and events the Naval Air Station holds every year. History brought to life through unique exhibits, free historic lectures series, aviation-themed Aviation Career Education and Explorer summer camps and special events.
