COURT HOUSE – Each year, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) of Cape May Court House, a non-profit organization that provides health care to County residents without medical insurance, hosts a 5K Run/Walk that raises funds and awareness for the VIM Clinic on Route 9. This year’s Run/Walk, which was once again sponsored by the South Jersey Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, was held April 4 at the Cape May County Park and Zoo, where a small army of runners and walkers enjoyed a morning in a bucolic setting with family and friends – all the while supporting a very good cause.
After the last runner crossed the 5K’s finish line, medals were presented to the event’s overall top performers and also to the fastest male and female athletes in numerous age groups.
The overall winner of the 5K Run was Jordan Smith, 25, of Seaville, NJ, who finished the race in 19 minutes and 3 seconds. Smith was followed closely by Bob Manning, 24, of St. Davids, PA, 19:18, second place; and Stig Blomkvest, 49, of North Cape May, NJ, 20:04, third place.
In the Women’s Division, Karen Westmoreland, 38, of Abington, PA, took home the first place medal after finishing the race with a time of 21:18. Westmoreland was ahead of Glynne Bassey, 36, of St. Louis Park, MN, 23:19, second place; and Jill Lapworth, 47, of Cape May, NJ, 24:19, third place.

The funds raised during this year’s 5K Run/Walk will immediately be put to good use at the VIM Clinic, located at 423 North Route 9 in Cape May Court House, NJ, where doctors, nurses and other volunteers focus on providing patients with primary health care while emphasizing disease prevention, health promotion and education, and patient accountability.
VIM of Cape May County is always in need of additional financial support and volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering their time or making a monetary donation can email jmeiluta@vimcmc.org or phone (609) 463-2846. For additional information, please visit www.vimcmc.org.
