UPDATE: Similar Named Group Responds; Middle Hockey Association Warns Against Misrepresentation

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Attention all loyal businesses and supporters of the Middle Township Hockey Association: We would like to advise everyone to beware of people using a similar name to our Middle Township Hockey Association and asking for money. We are not soliciting local business’s for sponsors for a hockey ad book/yearbook.
We have listed some basic signs of charity scams for your awareness (as listed by the Consumer Affairs):
• Uses a name that closely resembles that of a better-known, reputable organization.
• Refuses to provide detailed information about its identity, mission, costs, and how the donation will be used.
• Won’t provide proof that a contribution is tax deductible.
• Thanks you for a pledge you don’t remember making.
• Uses high-pressure tactics like trying to get you to donate immediately, without giving you time to think about it and do your research.
• Asks for donations in cash or asks you to wire money.
Middle Township Hockey Assoc is a 501(c) 3 non profit with the IRS. Anytime that we ask for your support, Middle Township Hockey Members will have proper documentation with them.
Our mission for our fundraising is for the betterment of the youth hockey players in Middle Township and all of Cape May County. Helping them do positive activities, learning sportsmanship, outdoor exercise and making new friendships.

Middle Township Panthers Ice Hockey Club Responds:
I am a representative of Middle Township Panthers Ice Hockey Club. We are another organization in Middle Twp, yes using a similar name but we are legitimate. We have an IRS provided EIN (46-5712233) and are in the application stages of getting our 501(c)3 non-profit status. We have filed with the State of NJ and have received our Business Registration Certificate.
We are doing an ad book / yearbook fundraising drive to off set some of the costs for practice ice time, uniforms & league fees. We are part of the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League. Website: http://sjhshl.pointstreaksites.com/view/sjhshl/standings
We have never refused to give information about our identity. We do not ask for cash or money to be wired. Checks are preferred and are asked to be made payable to PANTHERS ICE HOCKEY. Attached are copies that are given when we ask for a donation. Also included in those copies is our web address.
Our mailing address is listed below and for some of our legal documents our President’s home address in Atlantic City has been used when a physical address has been required.
We would hope that some type of rebuttal or retraction can be done on our behalf. We would like to assure the local business’ that we are not a scam.
Thank you for your time & listening to our response.
