Trains Return To Seashore Lines for Three Weeks

By Jack Fichter

RIO GRANDE – Rail fans and train lovers will have an opportunity to ride Cape May Seashore Lines (CMSL) railroad for the next three weeks.
The line has been silent for four years. CMSL President Tony Macrie told the Herald trains will run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through Fri., Sept 3.
The railroad has changed some station stops. Passengers can board the train at the Welcome Center in Cape May or a new stop in Rio Grande at the rail yard off Route 47, just north of the crossing. Patrons can use the parking lot across the street from Avalon Carpet.
Trains depart Rio Grande at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Trains leave Cape May at 11:10 a.m., 1:10 p.m. and 3:10 p.m.
Riders can also request a stop at Hawk Haven Winery for a tour and visit to the tasting room.
Round trip fares are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 2 to 12.
Macrie said the line had some issues with tracks and equipment storage earlier in the year that have been cleared up.
“We never went away, we never gave up,” he said.
Even though the summer season is waning, Macrie said visitors will know the train ride is back and next summer’s start up will be easier.
Parents have been bringing youngsters to the train this week, perhaps for their first ride on the rails.
The railroad uses historic 1950s vintage Budd Cars from Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines and Pennsylvania Railroad Locomotive No. 7000.
