CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Concussion Care Center at Cape Regional celebrated its grand opening with an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. The Concussion Care Center is located within the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department on the first floor of the Medical Center.
Guests and Cape Regional Team Members participated in a one-hour question-and-answer session followed by a tour of the new Center. During the tour, guests were given a demonstration of the technology that will be used to diagnose and treat patients with concussions: The Dynavision (D2) is the latest and most sophisticated piece of equipment which addresses cognitive and motor deficits that occur from the result of a concussion. The Center also offers the Biodex Balance System which addresses both balance and vestibular deficits that may occur from the result of a concussion.
Following the tour, Middle Township Councilman, Michael Clark, “cut the ribbon” on the new Center and presented A.J. Weiss, Occupational Therapy Manager, with a Certificate of Appreciation from Middle Township. “On behalf of the residents and visitors of Cape May County, I would like to thank Cape Regional Health System for developing a comprehensive program and for opening the first and only Concussion Care Center in the region,” stated Councilman Clark. “The Concussion Care Center will provide a valuable service to our community in the treatment of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.”
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when a person receives a blow to the head, neck or upper body causing the brain to “rattle or shake” inside the skull. The “rattling or shaking” against the hard structure of the skull can cause neurological damage. If the impact is significant enough, or if a person sustains multiple concussions before the brain fully heals, the damage can be permanent.
The Concussion Care Center has recently completed renovation on a 1,500 square foot location which provides those seeking treatment for a concussion with a private, quiet, distraction-free area which allows for maximal recovery. To schedule an evaluation, please call 609-463-2629.
