Stone Harbor Receives Large Donation from Sturdy Savings

STONE HARBOR — The Borough of Stone Harbor has received a large donation from Sturdy Savings Bank to support the development and maintenance of the new Stone Harbor Freedom Park that will be developed in 2014 at 96th Street and Seng Place. Sturdy Savings Bank presented the Borough with a $2,500 check during the Tuesday, February 18th Council meeting and will present another $2,500 check to support the Park in 2015.
“We are absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of Sturdy Savings Bank with their financial support of our new Stone Harbor Freedom Park”, said Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters. “Time and time again, Sturdy Savings Bank has offered assistance on a host of important community projects. The bank is like family to us and true partners in many important projects and events in the Borough”.
The presentation of the first $2,500 check was made by Gina Becker, Branch Manager of the Stone Harbor branch of Sturdy Savings Bank and by Greg Reich, Sturdy Financial Services Investment Advisor Representative. Accepting the check in behalf of the Borough were Mayor Walters and Councilwoman Joan Kramar who has championed the development of the Stone Harbor Freedom Park.
The new Stone Harbor Freedom Park will include a small section of I-beam secured from the site of the World Trade Center. It was one of the final artifacts to be released by the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey to a local community for an everlasting tribute. The new Park will be located just east of the Stone Harbor Fireman’s Memorial, steps away from Borough Hall and the business district. It features a small civic gathering space with small tables and benches. The Park includes a free standing stone wall, small trellis, and natural features including drought-tolerant trees, flowering vines, and lawn areas. A small light pole will spotlight the artifact during the evening hours.
Earlier this month, the Cape May County Freeholders awarded a sum of $99,600 to Stone Harbor to support the design and development of the Park. Donations from the public will be used to enhance and maintain the park for generations to come.
