TRENTON — The New Jersey State Library in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Treasury’s Division of Taxation has been able to connect local small business owners and entrepreneurs with vital information through classes taught at NJ libraries since 2016. A new round of classes will begin in March at libraries across the state. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are scheduled through June and are taught by staff from the Taxation University, an outreach and training unit within the Division of Taxation. There are four different workshops:
· Business Registration and Reporting Business Income where participants will learn the different business structures; how to register a small business in New Jersey; legal entity registration; individual structured business registration; how to report your New Jersey business income.
· NJ Sales Tax where participants will learn about the taxability of products and services; how to use NJ Exemption Certificates; filing sales and use tax returns.
· Construction Trades and NJ Sales Tax where participants will learn about taxable products and services; purchasing materials; capital improvements vs. repairs; invoicing clients; collecting NJ sales tax & filing returns; and
· Online Business and NJ Sales Tax where participants will learn about the taxability of products and services; sales inside and outside of NJ; information on shipping products; collecting and reporting NJ sales tax.
The size of the workshops is being kept small to enable attendees to ask questions about their specific situations and get the answers they need.
