CAPE MAY — The Cape May Point Post Office has been invited to partake in this year’s Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club’s fourth annual Mutt Strut at Cape May’s Beachfront Promenade on Sat., Sept. 18, from 8 a.m. until noon by representing the United States Postal Service’s 2010 Social Awareness Stamps, Animal Rescue-Adopt a Shelter Pet.
On behalf of the United States Postal Service, Cape May Point Postmaster Melissa Lomax will be distributing complimentary USA Philatelic Magazines to the attendees, while supplies last. The full-color magazine has 10 different limited edition covers, each representing one of the 10 shelter animals depicted on the stamps.
The United States Postal Service’s 2010 Social Awareness Stamps: Animal Rescue-Adopt a Shelter Pet will be available to purchase. “These stamps continue a Postal Service tradition of bringing attention to serious social issues of the day…one letter at a time,” said Lomax. “This campaign will increase public awareness about sheltered pets, and our hope is that it will encourage pet adoption and promote humane and responsible pet care.”
The cost is $8.80 for a sheet of 20 44-cent stamps. The Animal Rescue – Adopt-a-Shelter Pet commemorative stamps feature photographs of five cats and five dogs adopted from a shelter in New Milford, Conn. Every year, six to eight million cats and dogs enter animal shelters, and of that number, nearly half are euthanized.
Although the problem seems overwhelming, the key to the solution is adopting a shelter pet when seeking a new companion and ensuring that the animal is spayed or neutered.
The stamps can be ordered at usps.com, by calling 1-800-STAMP.24 (1-800-782-6724), or by visiting your local post office.
The fourth annual Mutt Strut provides the opportunity each year for participating dogs and owners to enjoy a morning stroll on Cape May’s Promenade. The Mutt Strut is sponsored by the Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club.

Walkers and their canine friends will also support a worthwhile cause. Half of the event’s proceeds go to Animal Outreach of Cape May County to assist them in reaching their goal of building a no-kill shelter in Lower Township. Owners can strut with their dog on the Promenade by registering outside of Convention Hall anytime between 8 a.m and noon.
The donation cost to strut is $1 per leg ($2 per person, $4 per dog); children under 10 years of age are free with an adult. For more information on the Animal Outreach of Cape May County, please visit: www.animalout reachofcmc.org.
The Mutt Strut is being held as part of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Responsible Dog Ownership Days, a nationwide initiative to educate the public about the importance of being a responsible dog owner.
