CREST HAVEN – Somebody in Paulsboro loved to visit Cape May County…virtually. Thanks to the wonder of Google Analytics, the county is able to get a snapshot of localities where website visitors to www.capemaycountygov.net live. That Gloucester County municipality of just over 6,000 was the recent top city, according to Lenora Boninfante, county public information officer.
The subject arose at the July 16 freeholder caucus when the website was mentioned, and upgrades were discussed by C-Net the vendor who provides web maintenance.
Boninfante cited Google Analytics as a means to learn “who is coming to the site and where they are coming from.”
From a review of the site, she said the Search button, previously located at the bottom of the site, will be relocated to the top, for easier access by the public.
For a six-day period earlier this month, there were 8,144 visitors, over 2,200 returning visitors and 844 unique visitors who made over 10,000 visits. During those visits, there were 21,000 pages viewed. That is when Paulsboro surfaced as the top city in that time span.
After Paulsboro visitors viewed the county’s website from Philadelphia, Cape May, Egg Harbor Township, and Avalon. It is also possible to determine how long those visitors stayed on the site, and the pages they viewed.
Regardless where visitors call home, the top pages were for the County Park and Zoo, the Cape May County Clerk’s Office and then freeholders for document and record requests, Boninfante said.
After those came requests for human resources, the animal shelter and adoption center, and the clerk’s deed’s page.
“What did it cost?” asked Director of Operations Edmund Grant.”
“This was for free,” Boninfante replied.
“It’s almost like the NSA (National Security Agency),” quipped Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton.
“This will help us do a better site, we will know what they (visitors) are looking for,” Grant said.
Grant said the analysis is the “first step” in developing short-term improvements and come up with policies regarding the website.
