ShopRite joined Partners in Caring again to work at eradicating hunger. The ShopRite Partners in Caring program is a year-round community based hunger fighting initiative. This program works to help those meet the nutritional needs of their families and elderly who may have to go without. The Shoprite stores that raise the most amount of money are able to feature associates on the back of a Cheerios box.
ShopRite of Rio Grande has been featured on the back of the Cheerios box for the last seven years. This year’s theme was “Hope for the Hungry” and that is exactly what the local ShopRite did. They raised $11,613 for local food banks and shelters
.
Orien Reid, spokeswoman, wanted to particularly thank the customers who donated throughout the year. “Many people now will have food,” Reid said. She told a story about hunger can happen to anyone. “The face of hunger is as diverse as America,” she stated.
Associates Janice DeGaetano and Beverly Nixon were selected by ShopRite of Rio Grande to appear on the special-edition box of Cheerios. This limited-edition cereal box was unveiled to community leaders on March 17. Even Nixon’ 8 year old granddaughter helped to raise money for Partners in Caring.
“I wanted to help mom-mom,” Cheyann told the Herald. During Irish Fest she dressed up as a leprechaun and went around asking people for donations. She helped to raise around $400. She even had a bake sale! This is her second year trying to raise money for those in need in her community.
Reid called those who helped “hometown heroes” and encouraged spectators to have Nixon and DeGaetano sign the back of the box.
Orien shared startling statistics about the ratio of hungry children in the United States. 1 in 5 children rely on food stamps. That is a total of 16 million children, most of whom are unsure of where their next meal is going to come from. Most of these children are going to school hungry, Orien pointed out. “Kids cannot learn without proper nutrition.”
ShopRite’s involvement in Partners for Caring is so that children do not go to school without breakfast and so senior citizens do not have to make the decision to fill a prescription or to buy groceries.
Participating in Partners for Caring is something you are probably already doing. By shopping at ShopRite you are supporting your neighbors who may be going without food. By purchasing groceries with the Partners in Caring tag you are supporting the fight against hunger.
