By Herald Staff

COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer recognized 79 active regular volunteers and the approximately 150 to 200 on call volunteers at a breakfast held on April 19, at the Holiness Camp, 470 Seashore Road, Erma.
The program was designed to thank the volunteers for more than 1,000 volunteer hours given to the Correctional Center in 2010, as well as, to provide training to volunteers.
Schaffer presented Robert Padilla, who is affiliated with the Cape May Baptist Church in Marmora, with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Padilla has been volunteering at the Correctional Center for the last 23 years.
“There isn’t enough money in the budget to do what these volunteers do. You couldn’t afford to purchase their time. They are truly committed to helping their fellow man. Mr. Padilla is a perfect example of a dedicated individual who makes a difference in people’s lives. These folks are to be commended for their service,” said Schaffer
In 2010 at the Cape May County Correction Center, these volunteers participated in 129 AA Meetings, 47 NA Meetings, 89 Bible Studies, 242 Church Services, and 1,494 religious contacts, as well as, contacts on behalf of inmates.
Additionally, over 400 education classes including GED, ABE, computer, parenting, financial and literacy classes targeting pregnant women with alcohol and drug abuse problems were offered.
Schaffer added, “I need to personally commend Jean Crean and her staff for the outstanding job she does along with her staff coordinating all the programs offered to the inmates at the Correctional Center. Their dedication and performance exceeds expectations.”
