CAPE MAY— Spooky, scary or just plain silly scarecrows are needed to help transform the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., for the Halloween season.
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is looking for homemade scarecrows to add to its Scarecrow Alley and help put the “spirit” back into the season. The scarecrows range from ghoulishly gruesome to foolishly funny and can be created by yourself or a team. Enter your creation for a chance to win!
Enter your scarecrow into one of three categories: “Individuals or Families,” “Clubs, Organizations, Non-profits, Churches and Schools,” and “Businesses.” Straw for your creation will be available beginning Sat., Sept. 18 from the MAC maintenance staff, which will also provide support stakes, if needed.
All entries receive a 4’ x 4’ foot area to decorate and larger spaces are available upon request.
Multiple Scarecrows, whimsical characters and/or miscellaneous props may be displayed in your 4’ x 4’ area.
Your scarecrow (s) (or display) may reflect a special theme or promote your organization or business, but cannot represent controversial, social, religious or political opinions or statements.
Please construct your scarecrow to withstand the weather elements by using care in choosing your material and attaching all decorations firmly to your scarecrow (or display). For voting purposes and accuracy, please give your creation a title.
A sign will be placed by MAC at each display to announce your name and the scarecrow’s title. Visitors to the Physick Estate will be asked to vote for their favorite scarecrow by filling out a ballot available in the Carriage House on the grounds of the Estate.
The Annual Halloween parade scheduled for Sun., Oct. 24 will end at the Physick Estate and all participants and visitors during the parade will be encouraged to vote for their favorite scarecrow. Feel free to encourage your friends and family to visit the Estate and vote.
The deadline to enter your scarecrow in the contest is Fri., Sept. 30. The scarecrows will be on display from Fri., Oct. 1 through Mon., Nov. 1. The first place prize in the “Individuals or Families,” category is a Cape May Gift Certificate, which can be used at a wide variety of Cape May accommodations, restaurants, retail stores and attractions any time of the year.
The first place prize in the “Clubs, Organizations, Non-profits, Churches and Schools” is a pizza party. First place winners in the “Businesses” category will receive a half page ad in the holiday or winter issue of “This Week in Cape May.”
