JACKSON — Wet roads and rain are just typical workday complications for the 168 school bus drivers who showed at the Hurricane Harbor parking lot at Great Adventure for the 38th Annual Safety Competition. And four Lower Township drivers and their supervisor didn’t let the rain at the May 2 event keep them from demonstrating their excellence behind the wheel.
Over the course of the morning, the drivers participated in four distinct stages of competition: a pre-trip bus inspection, a personal appearance inspection and interview with State Police, a 30 question written test and finally a nine obstacle course to demonstrate their hands-on skill.
While waiting for their turn to compete, drivers picnicked with family and friends who had come to cheer them on, and they networked with colleagues from other districts. When the sun finally broke through, they enjoyed a few hours of amusement at Great Adventures.
All four Lower Township drivers practiced for the event on their own time, and they were proud to represent their district well.
David M. Smith took home a first place prize. Victoria Mollenkof placed second; Joshua Keaveney placed sixth, and Lois Morrison placed 11th.
