CHERRY HILL & AVALON – The South Jersey Postal Customer Council (SJPCC), along with the assistance of several Postmasters and Postal Inspectors, hosted two Consumer Fraud Awareness Seminars in New Jersey during the Federal Trade Commission’s National Consumer Protection Week, March 5–11, 2017.
Every year, Consumer Protection Week combines the resources offered by federal agencies and their partners to encourage our communities to manage their credit scores, their money accounts, how to stay safe online and to understand how to steer clear from fraudulent scams. The first seminar was on Friday, March 3, 2017. The speakers teamed up with the local JCC in Cherry Hill, N.J. and hosted a very informative seminar on consumer protection, including preventing mail fraud, identity theft, check, lottery and foreign scams, internet safety, phishing and recognizing common identifiers of secure banking and secure shopping websites. Postal Inspectors George Clark and Thomas Ninan provided a down-to-earth and engaging presentation on the roles each of us play, not only protecting ourselves from identity theft and fraudulent scams, but protecting our loved ones and our fellow neighbors. After the event, Cherry Hill Postmaster Rob Hudson and his supervisor Russell Carmody made themselves readily available to speak with their town members on the numerous topics discussed.
The second seminar was on Thursday, March 9, 2017 and was held at the Avalon Community Center. Postal Inspector Tony Fenu and several Postmasters addressed the crowd of community members in a panel forum. Many community residents, including officers from the local police department, participated in an enjoyable discussion on ways to stay safe in today’s technological world. Inspector Fenu utilized the old adage that “if it seems too good to be true, then it probably isn’t.” Postmaster and SJPCC Postal Chair Bernadette Puodziunas and Postmaster Mandeep Kaur reminded everyone that our local carriers, clerks, supervisors, and Postmasters are always working together to protect the communities we serve.
“The message of consumer protection is simple: it’s never too early or too late to become a more informed and empowered consumer and community member,” said Avalon Postmaster and SJPCC Communications Chair Melissa Lomax. “The U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are committed to helping consumers of all ages learn how they can protect their privacy and steer clear of frauds and scams,” Lomax continued.
