COURT HOUSE — Cape Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce the opening of their Inpatient Peritoneal Dialysis Program.
The new program is welcome news to Cape May County kidney patients who have had to travel by ambulance outside of the county for care when inpatient hospitalization was needed. The new program provides state-of-the-art care, delivered by a specially-trained peritoneal dialysis team of approximately 20 registered nurses and Board-certified nephrologists. The nursing team was trained by Fresenius Medical Care – named the 2012 Most Innovative Company by Forbes Magazine.
“We are able to care for inpatients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) in the convenience and comfort of our own community medical center,” stated Gina McNeal, R.N., member of the Peritoneal Dialysis Team. “This is exciting news for our patients and the staff at Cape Regional Medical Center.”
Ronald Mathis is a retired structural engineer who moved back to North Wildwood with his wife, Jackie, about seven years ago. Ron grew up in Wildwood Crest prior to enlisting in the Navy. After being diagnosed with renal failure in 2008, Mr. Mathis began receiving hemodialysis treatments; in October, 2012 he started peritoneal dialysis. “Our niece, Ashley, works in the Emergency Room at Cape Regional Medical Center and called to tell us of the new PD program,” stated Mr. Mathis, who was recently admitted to Cape Regional. “Having the ability to stay at Cape Regional when I need hospitalization is such a great convenience and a huge relief. The staff gives kind and compassionate care and is trained extremely well in peritoneal dialysis. Their attention to detail and concern to follow sterile precautions are vital for my care,” Mathis continued.
Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are both used to treat kidney failure; peritoneal dialysis is a less tiresome, less time consuming process that affords patients many more freedoms as well as other benefits. In Mr. Mathis’ case, he is able to complete his treatments in the privacy of his own home.
