Ocean City Police Get Use of Two ATV Vehicles for Beach Patrols

By Herald Staff

OCEAN CITY — On Tuesday, Sept. 16, Ocean City Police Department received two new Bombardier ATV vehicles for patrols along the beachfront.
Those vehicles were obtained at no additional cost to the city through a program offered by Bombardier and Surf and Turf Power Sports, according to a release.
The Police Department will have use of the two vehicles for one year. At the end of the year a new application can be submitted for two more new vehicles that will run an additional year.
The Police Department was educated about this program by a former seasonal police officer, Tom Larosa, who is now employed by Surf and Turf Power Sports.
The Police Department finds these vehicles to be a valuable asset not only during the summer months but also year round.
The department may currently patrol the entire beach front at a time when lifeguards are no longer on duty and many beachfront homes are vacant for the winter months. This gives it the ability to check properties from the beachfront location in addition to normal checks from the inland side of the island.
It also gives police the ability to patrol along the beach now that the four-wheel drive fishing permits have been issued.
The police department can now check for valid permits and enforce the regulations required when a beach permit is issued to a resident. With the beaches now open 24 hours a day this gives us the ability to have officers more visible around the clock in an area that in the past went under patrolled.
