NEW PHOTOS ADDED: Pipes ‘n’ Drums Bring Out Crowd at Irish Festival

By Al Campbell

NORTH WILDWOOD — As the warm breeze swept over the Eighth Avenue Recreation Field, the eerie sound of bagpipes and drums could be heard Sat., Sept. 25.
It was the Brian Riley Pipe Exhibition, a feature of the 19th annual Irish Fall Festival in this city hosted by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America.
The festivities began as the Cape May County Emerald Society paraded onto the lush green field with flags a-fluttering.
Mayor William Henfey greeted the crowd, which encircled the field. Dolly McGee sang the Star Spangled Banner, and the event was officially open.
First on the field was the Philadelphia Emerald Society, followed by the Camden County Emerald Society.
Others lined up and performed tunes that brought smiles and tears to those wearing all shades of green.
Many other events were held throughout the city. The event will continue through Sunday. A special Irish Mass is planned at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Church, Glenwood and Atlantic avenues.
