WILDWOOD — Morey’s Piers earned a 2010 New Jersey Governor’s Award for Tourism Excellence for its highly successful 2009 40th Anniversary marketing campaign. Norris Clark, director of Sales and Marketing, received the award on behalf of the Morey Organization, on Thursday, April 15, during the 2010 New Jersey Governor’s Conference on Tourism at Atlantic City’s Trump Marina.
The award-winning marketing campaign began in January 2009 with a “memorial service” for Morey’s classic dark ride, the Golden Nugget. Having been a staple of Morey’s Piers and the Wildwoods for over 50 years, the Golden Nugget was slated for demolition at the beginning of the year.
Morey’s Piers saw that as an opportunity and organized a celebration of the famous site, attracting over 1,000 people from across the country in frigid temperatures to pay their respects, see a memorial exhibit, hear eulogies, receive memorial tokens, warm over chowder, and to view a model of a new proposed coaster. The ceremony gained Morey’s media coverage in publications throughout the region, as well as a story in the New York Times.
The 40th Anniversary marketing campaign continued into spring and summer 2009, as Morey’s hosted a multitude of events, along with giving guests complimentary birthday cupcakes throughout the summer. Morey’s also unveiled a new website offering visitors a sensory experience through use of boardwalk sights and sounds while browsing its pages.
Also in 2009, Morey’s celebrated its 40th birthday by publishing an anniversary book entitled, “A Wild Ride.” The book chronicles the 40-year history of Morey’s Piers, from its beginnings as having a single giant slide to becoming an amusement empire. In conjunction with the new book, Morey’s held a “Book Launch” ceremony to honor the VIPs associated with the park’s history and included Morey’s literally launching the new book in the arms of a human cannonball, over the park’s entrance archway and into the middle of a crowded amusement pier. The launch drew thousands of onlookers and resulted in major TV and print media coverage.
Morey’s Piers 40th Anniversary marketing campaign was selected from numerous nominations submitted from across New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel & Tourism and the New Jersey Travel Industry Association, the honorees represent a group of organizations who have shown exemplary dedication to New Jersey’s tourism industry. These organizations vary in size, and many have been able to attain impressive results on modest budgets. The award winners targeted out-of-state visitors, increased the visitor’s length of stay, and drove home the message that New Jersey is a travel destination second to none. All were able to illustrate this through their nomination by firmly and reliably tracking their return on investment.
The New Jersey Governor’s Conference on Tourism is a joint venture of the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel & Tourism and the New Jersey Travel Industry Association. The Governor’s Tourism Awards Ceremony serves to honor the individuals and organizations that have contributed to the experience of visitors and the quality of life of New Jersey residents
