The 7th Annual Mike’s Seafood Run/Walk for Autism was cancelled for the first time ever. However, in the face of adversity Mike’s Seafood was able to accomplish the goal he had intended to fulfill and then some.
Mother Nature was uncooperative the day the run/walk was supposed to take place. The morning of the race, 60 mile per hour winds took over Sea Isle City and the boardwalk was covered in ice. The first concern was for the safety of all the participants, therefore at 8 AM the race had to be cancelled.
With dozens of volunteers and countless amounts of food to feed participants after the race Michael and Jeannie Monichetti, Owners of Mike’s Seafood, decided to do something positive for the community in more ways than one. After calling and emailing the participants that the race was cancelled, Michael Monichetti had the idea to donate all the food that had been donated for the event. They decided to take over 50 cases of food to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. They were able to donate hundreds of bagels, muffins, yogurt, juice and fresh fruit to hundreds of people in need in the community.
Michael Monichetti said when he called the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and told them he was planning on delivering this large amount of food they initially thought he was kidding. “It was a great thing to do for people in need,” Michael Monichetti said. “It’s just a good feeling.”
Not only did the Atlantic City Rescue Mission benefit from the lack of cooperative weather, the intended organizations were also helped. Most meteorologists were calling for bad weather days before the event yet over 400 people registered for the run/walk just days before. “I think it shows how big people’s hearts are,” Monichetti said.
The money raised for the Autism 5K Run/1 Mile Walk went to various organizations both nationally and locally. Autism Speaks, Special Services in Cape May and Atlantic County, Autism Support Groups and families of special needs children were all beneficiaries of this race.
The inclement weather proved to be beneficial for many people in the community. Mike’s Seafood would like to thank everyone who supported the 7th Annual Walk/Run for Autism. For more information on the annual Run/Walk for Autism visit http://www.polarbearrunwalkforautism.com/.
