The Sixth Annual Mike’s Seafood Polar Bear Run Walk for Autism held on Sunday, Feb. 16 was a huge success. This family-friendly event capped off Sea Isle City’s Polar Bear Weekend.
Over two thousand runners and walkers participated in order to raise funds and awareness for a disorder that affects 1 out of 88 children.
“We are very thankful to have the chance to bring autism awareness to so many people,” said Mike Monichetti, owner of Mike’s Seafood, who organizes the event along with his wife Jeannie. “Any day you can do something for children with disabilities, it’s a good day!” expressed Mike.
The 5K race, directed by Mike Givens, took place along Sea Isle City’s promenade and has grown in popularity over its history to include over 800 participants in 2014. Trophies were awarded to the top male and female runners. Dan Goll of Maple Shade, NJ, took first place overall in the men’s category with a time of 16:45.84. Haley Yost of New Tripoli, PA, was victorious in the women’s category with a time of 19:57.18.
Awards and door prizes were distributed to winners during a Post-Race Party held in a heated tent at the LaCosta Complex. Participants enjoyed a huge buffet along with live music, clowns, and face painters.
The run and walk benefits Autism Speaks, special services schools, autism support groups and families with special-needs children. This year’s fundraising efforts produced extraordinary results, with donations exceeding $50,000 and still coming in.
If you were not able to attend the run, it’s not too late to donate! Visit polarbearrunwalkforautism.com and click the “Donate” tab today. Mike’s Seafood would like to thank all participants, sponsors, and volunteers who made this year’s event such an overwhelming success.
