Memorial Day Weekend in the Wildwoods is Chock-Full of Dedications, Events and Brand New Attractions

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – Memorial Day Weekend in the Wildwoods, Friday, May 28 through Monday, May 31, is jam-packed with events and activities for the entire family. During this Memorial Day Weekend, the Wildwoods will unveil many new attractions; celebrate the anniversaries of the Wildwoods International Kite Festival and Wildwood Crest; and honor U.S. troops of the past, present and future.

Kicking off Memorial Day Weekend in the Wildwoods is the island’s annual ”Unlocking of the Ocean” Ceremony on Friday, May 28. Local, county and state officials, along with Wildwoods students, will celebrate the start of the summer season in the Wildwoods by “Unlocking the Ocean” with a ceremonial giant key. The Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony will start at noon on the beach next to the Wildwoods Convention Center, located at 4501 Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ.

Immediately following the Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony, students from schools throughout the Wildwoods will kick-off of the 25th Annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival by flying their newly made kites on the beach. The silver anniversary of the Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the largest kite festival in North America, will take place Friday, May 28 through Monday, May 31 on the beach outside of the Wildwoods Convention Center, as well as inside the venue. The festival will feature kites of all shapes and sizes – from inflatable flying creatures to traditional kites – soaring high over the beach at Rio Grande Avenue in the Wildwoods; along with kite-flying competitions, workshops, games and competitions, auctions and much more. Because Memorial Day is a time to remember fallen soldiers and those who are still fighting for our country abroad, the Wildwoods will hold a Dedication and Unveiling Ceremony for the new Wildwoods Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Saturday, May 29, at noon. The new memorial wall is a half-size granite replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the only permanent memorial in the Northeast, other than the Memorial in Washington, D.C. Immediately following the Dedication and Unveiling Ceremony, a Celebration of Heroes Festival will take place at Fox Park, across from the Wildwoods Convention Center, until 10 p.m. with live music and entertainment, food, craft vendors and more. For more information, contact Vince DePrinzio at 609-463-8342 or 609-827-7062.

Morey’s Piers will be adding to the Memorial Day Weekend festivities in the Wildwoods, hosting the unveiling of several new attractions and first ever Curley Fry Festival. At 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, Morey’s Piers will unveil its new mystery attraction, tentatively called “Ignis Fatuus.” Although the nature and type of the new ride will remain a mystery until its unveiling, it’s sure to be a hit once operational. In addition to “Ignis Fatuus,” Morey’s will also unveil a first-of-its-kind Adventure Mirror Maze, designed by Adrian Fisher of the United Kingdom, the king of mazes. The attraction will also contain “The Vault” Laser Maze Challenge, as well as self-serve bulk candy shop.

On Monday, May 31, Morey’s will hold its first annual Curley Fry Festival to celebrate the opening of their new boardwalk restaurant, Joe’s Fish Co. The festival will feature the first ever Major League Eating Challenge to be held in the Wildwoods, which will include some of the world’s top speed eaters competing to eat as many Curley Fries as they can in the shortest amount of time. The competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. in front of Joe’s Fish Co. located at Morey’s Surfside Pier, 25th Street and Boardwalk in Wildwood. Morey’s new restaurant will offer a little bit of everything including local and regional finfish and shellfish, brick oven pizzas, hearty salads, panini, burgers, and Morey’s famous Curley Fries, as well as drink options including “Lemon Shake Ups,” bottled and draft beers, wine by the glass and bottle, and Joe’s Fish Co.’s signature drink, the Margarita.

Also during Memorial Day Weekend, the city of Wildwood Crest will begin its 100th anniversary celebration during the Wildwood Crest Centennial Summer Kickoff Weekend. On Saturday, May 29, a summer filled with celebrations begins with a performance by the Mango Men, one of the region’s top party bands, singing Jimmy Buffet and other popular music covers, as well as summer-themed original music. And on Sunday, May 30, the celebration will continue with a performance from Parrotbeach, one of the most popular Jimmy Buffet tribute bands in the region. The concerts will take place at the Fern Road Fitness Park located at Fern and Ocean Avenues. Both concerts are FREE to attend and start at 7 p.m.

Memorial Day Weekend comes to an end on Monday, May 31 with a Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Monument, located at 1st and Spruce Avenues in North Wildwood. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and is FREE to attend. For more information, call 609-729-5832 or visit www.wildwoodpost184.com.
