McCorriston Named Correctional Officer of the Year

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced that Cape May County Corrections Officer Joseph C. McCorriston was named Cape May County Corrections Officer of the Year by the Jail Warden’s Association of New Jersey at their annual training conference in Long Branch.
Schaffer said, “Officer McCorriston started working at the Cape May County Correctional Center in February of 2004 and has been an outstanding employee.”
McCorriston was awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal by the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office in 2010 for his actions in reference to an incident that occurred on March 27.
McCorriston was assigned an outside security post at the Correction Center due to a major power outage that was caused by a motor vehicle accident with the vehicle fleeing the scene.
During his patrol and post assignment, McCorriston observed and stopped the vehicle involved in fleeing the scene and detained the person for Middle Township Police. The driver was later charged with driving under the influence.
During 2010, in his primary role as processing officer, McCorriston developed a plan to house special management inmates in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
Not only did he develop the plan, but implemented the process that was ultimately adopted as a new policy in the facility.
Schaffer added, “The utilization of this policy and unit has proved invaluable in the correctional facility and has helped alleviate some of our problems in regards to overcrowding and housing of inmates with special management issues.
“McCorriston is to be commended for his job performance and for being recognized by the State of New Jersey Jail Warden’s Association as Correctional Officer of the Year from Cape May County.”
