CAPE MAY — The 110-foot Spirit of Cape May, the Cape May Whale Watcher’s new flagship of the fleet, leaves for a Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventure, co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) and the Cape May Whale Watcher, on Sat., July 24 at 10 a.m.
This is the 14th year lighthouse fans have been taking the “Grand Lighthouse Tour,” a seven-hour voyage of discovery and adventure on the Delaware Bay featuring historic Delaware Bay lighthouses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
You will see historic lighthouses that were built to aid ships sailing the treacherous mid-channel of the Delaware Bay. Most of these lighthouses stand on pedestals out of sight from land, but are still operational and viewable by boat.
The following Delaware Bay lighthouses are featured on the cruise: Cape May Lighthouse, Harbor of Refuge (Lewes), Delaware Breakwater East End (Lewes), Brandywine Shoal, Fourteen Foot Light, Miah Maull Shoal, Cross Ledge, Elbow of Cross Ledge and Ship John Light. Each cruise not only offers superb lighthouse viewing and photo opportunities, but also includes narration on Delaware Bay lore and legend, and information on fishing, spawning grounds and more.
This cruise includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch. The Spirit of Cape May departs from the Miss Chris Marina, Second Avenue and Wilson Drive, at 10 a.m.
Admission is $99 per person and seating is limited to 175 passengers. If a cruise is not sold out in advance, the remaining tickets will be sold at the dock 30 minutes before departure. Free parking is available at the marina.
Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventures are also offered on the following dates this year: August 28 and September 18. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (609) 884-5404 or (800) 275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.
