Lower Township Chamber of Commerce has awarded Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum an award for 20 years of preservation efforts at Historic Hangar #1. Museum Chairman Dr. Joseph Salvatore commented, “It’s a great honor and vote of confidence to be honored and appreciated by neighboring businesses.”
The annual dinner held by the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce recognizes individuals and businesses that go above and beyond, and those who have been inspirational within the community. NASW Aviation Museum was recognized for the ongoing preservation efforts to restore Hangar #1 while also giving thousands of visitors a place to learn and explore history in fun and interactive way. The 92,000-square-foot all-wood structure was once in danger of being demolished, but is now about 80 percent restored and listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Efforts have included major restoration of the main roof, rehabilitation of the hangar doors and replacement of most of the over 4,200 windows. In addition to the award from the Chamber, the foundation was also given special recognition by Senator Van Drew and Congressman LoBiondo.
The Museum’s mission includes memorializing the 42 men who died at the base, educating the public and restoring the hangar building. On Nov. 11, 2017, NASW will host Cape May County’s Veteran’s Day Celebration in an event free to the public beginning at 2 p.m. Three exhibits will be on display honoring local heroes.
