COURT HOUSE – The Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded Cape Regional Medical Center a $49,846 grant for breast cancer education and screenings. This is the third year the Medical Center has received the Komen Grant.
“Last year’s grant supported the Parish Nurse Program and the Center for Lifestyle Management to reach 668 women with breast cancer education,” stated Gloria Schultz, Program Navigator at Cape Regional Medical Center. “Our goal was to have 120 women obtain screening mammograms. By March 31, 2012 (the end of the grant year) 172 women in Cape May County had obtained screening mammograms through the grant’s outreach program.”
Between April, 2012 and March, 2013, the program’s goal is to reach an additional 300 women with breast cancer education with the important message of breast screenings and assist at least 150 women in obtaining their screening mammograms in Cape May County. In 2011, the program began a successful breast cancer support group which will continue during the 2012/2013 grant year. In addition, the program developed a resource list of breast cancer support services in the region. The program will be expanded to focus on women between the ages of 40-64 while continuing service to women 65 years of age and older. Information and sign-up regarding education and screenings will be accomplished through the Parish Nurse Program, health fairs held throughout Cape May County, and speaking engagements held at faith-based and women’s organizations.
