COURT HOUSE — Registered Nurse Lou Keenan, is the Service Excellence of the Month recipient for June 2009. Keenan joined the medical center in June 1986 and has served as a medical surgical nurse since that time.
Keenan is a Vietnam veteran having served the U. S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman with the Marines in Vietnam in 1969, according to a release.
He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon for his service in the line of fire.
After his military discharge, Keenan attended Einstein School of Nursing in Philadelphia and graduated in 1974. He began his career at Einstein Medical Center as a nurse and served there until relocating to the Jersey Shore in 1986.
Keenan and his wife, Rosemary, have been married for 36 years and live in North Cape May. They have two grown children, Tim and Kelly Anne and three grandchildren.
Keenan was nominated for the award by a patient, who wrote, “When I was admitted, I went to the fourth floor and again the staff there was quite impressive. A certain nurse on the unit really stood out, his name is Lou Keenan. Everyone should get to experience Lou. He’s a very caring man with a great sense of humor, and yes humor is very good medicine! Lou would go out of his way just to stick his head in my room to see if I needed anything and if I were comfortable. He did what he could to make my stay as pleasant as possible. If you have a “nurse of the month” award, I highly recommend Lou. Thank you to all the staff for the caring and kindness I received.”
Keenan was joined by his wife and co-workers as the Service Excellence Committee, led by Deb Baehser, vice president of Patient Services, presented him with the honor.
Keenan was presented with the Service Excellence of the Month pin, $100 Visa gift card, a Cape Regional Medical Center duffel bag and beach towel and a three-month membership to the Fit for Life Fitness Center.
“I am flattered, honored and really speechless,” he stated during the award presentation. “I try to treat my patients like I would want to be treated, with dignity and respect. I take my responsibility very seriously. Thank you so much to this great honor,” Keenan stated.
