Karen Fox of Cape May has been nominated as the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) Volunteer of the Month for November 2018. Fox curated the Carroll Gallery Exhibit: “Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark.”
The exhibit was open to the public at the Emlen Physick Estate from April 27 through Oct. 31, 2018. It told the story of how a small band of preservationists and architects saved Cape May’s characteristic Victorian buildings. The exhibit featured reproductions of the actual Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) mechanical drawings these young architects and preservationists created in the 1970s, integral to the intense efforts that saved Cape May’s historic architecture. Brilliantly conceived by Fox, this exhibit will soon find a permanent home in Cape May City Hall.
MAC’s Chief Outreach Officer Mary Stewart nominated her for the honor. “Karen did a phenomenal job curating the exhibit, including her research and writing and using her vast network of contacts which helped us bring many of the original group of architects into the project,” she said. “She demonstrated a passion for this topic that shined through the panels. It was easy to see the enthusiasm of those young architects through her eyes. We are very grateful to Karen for helping us share this important Cape May story.”
