Interfaith Family-Housing Project Starts

By Herald Staff

COURT HOUSE — Family Promise of Cape May County Held its Phase II kick-off dinner Sept. 20 at the First Baptist Church of Cape May Court House.
The dinner officially marked the second phase of development for this new family-housing organization.
To this end, interested community partners joined with the board as they celebrated their progress and began their collective move forward toward their goal: Providing temporary housing and support, through interfaith cooperation, for the county’s homeless children and families.
Following dinner, the strategic plan was presented by convener, Rev. Wayne Conrad, with review and discussion following.
Per the plan, it is expected that Family Promise will begin housing families within the year, opening no later then September 2008. The plan and other Family Promise information was available at the meeting.
Family Promise of Cape May County is the local affiliate of the national Interfaith Hospitality Network.
During Phase I, Family Promise became fully incorporated and registered as a non-profit in New Jersey. Additionally, many congregations submitted written commitments to serve as “host” and/or “support” teams. Other congregations currently are in the process of formulating this commitment. “The more congregations identified, the lighter the yoke,” Conrad added.
President Nancy Runzer welcomed meeting participants, and, in a release, noted, “we have much to accomplish in a short time, everyone’s vision, energy and spirit, is very much welcomed and needed.
Rabbi Jacob Malki, reached beyond the meeting to encourage any and all who might be interested by saying, “We still need all those who have this wonderful mission, and the needs of our children and families, deep in their hearts.”
All interested residents and congregations are invited to participate in the hands-on county housing project. For information, to contribute or to volunteer, call 609-967-7358.
