Hundreds Dip in Chilly Stone Harbor Surf, Shiver

By Al Campbell

STONE HARBOR — Hundreds clustered on the 96th Street beach at noon at watch and cheer on intrepid bathers who took part in the first Stone Harbor Shiver, Sat., March 19.
It was an event like others on the coast that afforded an opportunity for eager bathers to find out just how chilly the Atlantic Ocean was on Sat., March 19.
From on high, Grant Russ photographed the historic event from the Stone Harbor Fire Department’s truck.
Hundreds of others snapped images of their friends and loved ones who donned swim suits to take the plunge.
Ever the proper couple, Robert and Josee Rich, attired in tux and proper dress, walked hand-in-hand into the surf, then turned and strode out.
A group of fearless firefighters cast caution to the wind and ran into the surf wearing their helmets and toting a fire hose.
