Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ to Buy Atlanticare Health Insurance Business

NEWARK– AtlantiCare and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) announced today they have reached an agreement for Horizon BCBSNJ to become the sole owner of AtlantiCare Administrators, Inc. (AAI). AAI is a third party administrator joint venture of AtlantiCare and Horizon BCBSNJ. Under the agreement, Horizon BCBSNJ will purchase AtlantiCare’s interest in AAI. AAI serves as a third party administrator for 200,000 Horizon BCBSNJ members living and working in southern New Jersey.
Customers of Horizon BCBSNJ, including AtlantiCare employees, serviced by AAI, will not see changes to their medical benefits or services as a result of this purchase. Approximately half of the employees of AAI will be offered positions with Horizon BCBSNJ. The remaining AAI employees will be considered for employment with AtlantiCare, if appropriately qualified, and others will be provided career counseling, training opportunities, and other resources to find employment.
AtlantiCare is a regional healthcare organization based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, whose more than 5,000 employees serve the healthcare needs of the community at more than 60 locations. A 2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner, AtlantiCare includes AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC), the AtlantiCare Foundation, AtlantiCare Health Plans, AtlantiCare Behavioral Health and AtlantiCare Health Services. ARMC became the 105th hospital in the nation to attain status as a Magnet™ designated hospital in March of 2004 and was redesignated a Magnet™ hospital in 2008.
AtlantiCare Administrators (AAI), located in Hammonton, New Jersey, provides health benefit services to businesses and employers in southeastern New Jersey. AHP operates in a partnership with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Through this joint venture (JV), employers headquartered in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties have access to Horizon’s extensive portfolio of affordable managed care plans as well as a full range of comprehensive traditional health insurance products and wellness programs. Through this partnership, and the independent Third Party Administrative (TPA) services, AHP and AAI provide services to more than 200,000 members.
