GOSHEN — Years of neglect has taken its toll on the once charming Goshen School House, located on Route 47 in the small town of Goshen. The school was built in 1872 and was last used as a classroom in 1961.
In 1967, the Goshen School House and its surrounding property was sold to the Goshen Fire District #4 by the Middle Township Board of Education for $1. In the past the school was used for company meetings and the towns annual community Christmas party. The property has set idle for many years and has been the target of vandalism.
On Aug. 6, 2011 David Ennis Sr., fire commissioner, Denis Deschatelets fire commissioner and David Ennis Jr. volunteered their services and time to make much-needed repairs to the roof of the property.
They are currently seeking volunteers to form a committee to help raise funds of $100,000 to obtain a $400,000 grant, which is currently available through the Historic Preservation Society. They are hoping to preserve the building to use once again for community projects and programs. The thought of even creating a town museum has been discussed.
Anyone interested in volunteering time or making donations for the restoration project may contact David Ennis Sr. 609-602-4515 or may stop in at the regularly scheduled commissioner meetings located at the Goshen Fire House, 331 North Route 47 at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
