OCEAN CITY – For people living with cancer, support from others who are sharing similar experiences offers strength and hope. To help Gildas Club South Jersey spread that strength and hope throughout the area, the Ocean City Home Charitable Foundation presented the organization with a $5,000 grant for its Adult Wellness Support Group.
The Adult Wellness Support Group meets weekly to discuss common issues, share experiences, build a social and emotional network, exchange practical information about cancer related topics, and serve as a forum to share how living with cancer has affected their lives. In 2014, an average of 40 area residents attended the weekly sessions, resulting in a total of 2,080 supportive experiences throughout the year.
“From psychological support to networking groups, and from educational workshops to social activities, Gildas Club offers a wide variety of wonderful services and opportunities to anyone who has been touched by cancer,” said Jean Jacobson, President of the Ocean City Home Charitable Foundation. “We’re pleased to help Gildas Club offer this vital support to people living with cancer.”
The grant awarded to Gildas Club South Jersey was one of 26 grants presented to area nonprofit organizations at the Ocean City Home Charitable Foundations awards reception in December of 2014. The Foundation presented a total of $90,000 in grants at the reception, bringing the organizations ten-year donation total to more than $1,035,000.
Gildas Club South Jersey is grateful that the Ocean City Home Charitable Foundation is part of such an essential service for those living with cancer, said Michelle Chalmers, Chief Executive Officer of Gildas Club South Jersey. Gildas Club members can attest to the importance and effectiveness of the Adult Wellness Support Group. We always feel strengthened by sharing the story of our journey with others who have personally walked in our shoes and learned to thrive with cancer, explains one member. In our moments of greatest doubt and frustration, we can count on receiving the help and support we need. We will never have to face this disease alone.
