CAPE MAY — On Saturday, October 5th, the halls of the Lower Cape May Regional High School were filled with the sound of enthusiastic girls, ages 10 through 14, and their one-on-one “big sisters”, volunteers from the Renaissance Club of Lower Cape H. S. The event was the first annual GIRLZ RULE conference put on by the Soroptimists International of Cape May, a local chapter of a global organization focused on empowering women and young girls. This Cape May organization has a current membership of 64 women, including the advisor of the Renaissance Club, Mary Rose Bispels.
This free conference, which included breakfast and lunch, offered three workshops designed to give young girls the tools they need to succeed, such as goal setting, healthy living and deconstructing media advertising. The keynote speaker, Michelle Bush, is a current Soroptomist member and past recipient of the Women’s Opportunity Award funded by the local Soroptomist organization. Michelle, mother of five children and now a successful realtor in Ocean city, delivered an inspirational talk on being the beautiful person that you know you are. Her message was received with rapt attention and occasional shouts of “GIRLZ RULE” by the enthusiastic attendees.
It was hard throughout the day to determine who was having more fun, the young attendees or the Soroptimists who facilitated the event. The consensus is that this empowering conference was a great success, and the Soroptimists International of Cape May County plan to make it an annual Fall event.
