The Greater Cape May Elks Lodge #2839 donated $1,000 to the three-day Greater Cape May Elks/Tom Beheler Youth Basketball Tournament and $1,680 for the Lower Township travel basketball teams to purchase new uniforms.
Jerry Krause, president of the Greater Cape May Elks Lodge, and Steve Holler Sr., district deputy, presented both checks to Mitch Plenn, Superintendent of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and John Herman, chairman of the Greater Cape May Elks/Tom Beheler Youth Basketball Tournament.
The basketball tournament draws boys and girls teams from organizations throughout southern New Jersey to play in one of the area’s largest holiday tournaments. The tournament was set up in memory of Tom Beheler, who operated the Sports ‘n’ Stuff store in Cape May, and who died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The tournament was initiated by Beheler’s wife, Charlotte, and John Herman, who was his best friend. Herman noted that part of proceeds of the tournament go to the ALS foundation.
Upon presenting the check, Holler noted that this donation was the latest collaboration with the Lower Township Department of Parks and Recreation, a partnership that started over 14 years ago.
