OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce announces that Dr. Kathleen Taylor, Superintendent of Ocean City School District and Sea Isle City School District, will receive the 2011 Salute to Working Women Award and will be honored at the April 27th Chamber of Commerce Luncheon at the Ocean City Yacht Club. The award recognizes women in business for their outstanding professional and personal achievements.
Dr. Taylor received her Bachelor of Science from East Stroudsburg University, her Master of Education from Arcadia University and her Doctor of Education from Widener University, where she also received the first Linda Lenhert Memorial Award for outstanding graduate student in education. In addition, Dr. Taylor is a member of two national/international honor societies for education.
The start of her career as an educator began in the Norristown Area School District, a 6500 student suburban-urban type school district, where Dr. Taylor taught social studies for grades 8-12 and coached a variety of teams, including girls’ high school swimming. Dr. Taylor also became Principal of the Alternative School for grades 1-12 in this district. Then she moved to the School District of Haverford Township, a 5500 student suburban district, as an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Secondary Schools and was awarded the Domenick Recchiutti Award for humanitarian service.
Dr. Taylor has been Superintendent for Ocean City School District for more than 4 years. During this time, Dr. Taylor led the School District in developing and implementing a 5 year Strategic Plan to improve academic achievement, improve communication and to be financially cost effective. Under her stewardship, the schools have made significant progress towards academic achievement and broadening the college-related opportunities for students. There have been substantial facility improvements made to school security and to the Intermediate School. In addition, there have been enhancements made to the School District’s communications tools via website, Family Connections and the Guardian Home Access. Dr. Taylor keeps the students the focus of her work and efforts and values observing them learning, doing and performing. For her efforts, Dr. Taylor was recently recognized at the Ocean City Martin Luther King Day Celebration with the “Key to the City.”
Community service for Dr. Taylor includes serving on the Ocean City Free Public Library Board, the Ocean City Historical Museum Board of Trustees, the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Ocean City Education Foundation.
Born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, her family moved quite a bit, including living in Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dr. Taylor is married, has four children – two daughters and two sons – and has a cute, lovable, but stubborn, dog.
