Crest Savings Bank recently became a major donor of Cape May County’s Habitat for Humanity to help with the opening of a new ReStore currently in the works in Cape May Court House, and set to open this spring. The new store will be located at Court House Village Center, 20 Court House South Dennis Rd., near TJ Maxx, and just to the left of Big Lots.
Opening a ReStore in Cape May County has been a dream of Habitat Cape May for nearly five years. Turning a huge (nearly 16,000 square feet) long-vacant space into a retail store requires a significant investment of volunteer time and financial resources, but Habitat has been able to count on the involvement of individuals, organizations and businesses throughout the county for support. “Crest Savings Bank is a perfect example of this support,” said Habitat Executive Director Shawn Lockyear. “We have partnered closely with Crest since our successful Federal Home Loan Bank project to build five new homes in Whitesboro. Our friends at Crest have been with us every step of the way as we worked towards our goal of opening a Habitat ReStore. Their advice and expertise, as well as generous financial support of the ReStore project, is helping to make our goal of building a sustainable non-profit organization a reality.”
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are a BIG departure from the average thrift store. ReStores are non-profit home improvement and donation centers that sell used (and sometimes new) appliances, furniture, fixtures, building materials and home goods to the public at a fraction of retail price. The new ReStore in Cape May Court House will be fully owned and operated by Habitat Cape May County, and the proceeds will expand Habitat’s efforts to help families build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter here in our local community.
Based on best practices from nearly 900 ReStores across the United States, Habitat Cape May expects the new store to generate revenue for building affordable housing for years to come. The new ReStore is scheduled to open in May 2017, but donations are being accepted now. Individuals, contractors and businesses can drop off merchandise at the store on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3 p.m., or call to schedule a free pick-up at (609) 463-0244. Donation pick-ups can be requested online as well at habitatcapemay.org, where volunteers can also sign up to help with the renovation.
