The local Cape May County community has rallied in support of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate after an estimated $4,000 in power tools were stolen from the organization’s construction site in Middle Township over the Christmas holiday (see article here: https://goo.gl/M2KDTk). Friends new and old have made online donations, mailed checks and stopped by the Habitat ReStore in Cape May Court House to leave gifts or tools that could be used by the volunteer construction team to complete the house at 209 Reeves St. One anonymous donor even dropped off a brand new set of Dewalt drills, clearly purchased specifically for the Habitat Cape May crew.
Executive Director Shawn Lockyear and Construction Supervisor Budd Springer were honored to accept two large donations to the tool fund as well, one of $2,000 from the Ocean First Foundation, and a second of $1,000 from the Avalon Lions. “This means so much to us,” Lockyear said. “The construction tools were the very first thing we purchased when we restarted our stick-building program back in 2012, and are truly symbolic of who we are and what we’ve achieved here in Cape May County. Thanks to the generosity of Ocean First, Avalon Lions, and many other businesses and individuals, we now have the funds to replace what was stolen and again properly outfit our amazing construction volunteers.”
Habitat Cape May is looking forward to finishing the current house for the Garcia-Santiago family in the next month, with a home dedication planned for early February. A new home in Middle Township will begin construction later in the Spring, providing an opportunity for more volunteers to get involved in a Habitat for Humanity build.
