SOMERS POINT – Thanks to the support of a good friend, Comfort Now’s annual holiday giveaway has not one, but two winners this year, each receiving a heater with free installation.
Bob McAllister of Linwood, President of Comfort Now, asked residents in Atlantic and Cape May counties to nominate themselves or someone in need to receive a new heater. Out of 37 nominations, Comfort Now selected Jennifer Gleason of Erma to receive a new gas boiler.
Jennifer lives with her five-year-old daughter Hannah. Jen and her husband Jim farmed several plots they lease in Cape May County until he passed away last March from cancer. This past summer, Jen continued farming a 19-acre plot herself. When their boiler broke during the winter, they had only a wood stove, fueled with wood Jennifer cut and split. Jennifer’s friend, Amanda Snell, nominated her for the contest, saying, “I couldn’t think of a family in greater need.”
“This is the second year we’ve held a heater giveaway for the holidays,” said Bob McAllister. “There’s no greater feeling than being able to lend a hand to our neighbors who really need it.”
Choosing a second winner happened through another gift. Bob’s friend, Peter Haberstroh of Ventnor Heights, had recently changed his heating system as part of a house raising when he saw Bob’s Facebook post about the giveaway. He offered his surplus gas boiler to be donated to a recipient of Bob’s choice: Constance Leone of Somers Point, who will also receive installation at no charge.
Constance was nominated by Genevieve Henderson, who wrote, “My friend has not had a working heater for at least three years. They were using a kerosene heater… now they have space heaters all over.”
“We’re thrilled by the generous spirit our community continues to show,” Bob McAllister said. “With Peter’s donation, now two families will be warm and comfortable for this winter and many more.”
