MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College will retrain adults for new careers in health care, education and social services through an Encore Career Grant provided by The Deerbrook Charitable Trust and Civic Ventures.
The Community College Encore Career grants support local training programs that help adults over 50 years old to become community health workers, pharmacy technicians, teachers of adult learners and more.
Nationwide, 15 colleges were selected to receive a Deerbrook Charitable Trust-Civic Ventures grant, and Atlantic Cape was the only New Jersey grantee. The grand award process was extremely competitive.
“In any economy, let alone a downturn, it can be tough to make a career transition,” explained Judy Goggin, vice president at Civic Ventures. “These grants recognize and support community colleges as a go-to place for boomers training for encore careers combining passion, purpose and a paycheck.”
The Deerbrook Charitable Trust-Civic Ventures grant will allow Atlantic Cape to train professionals with prior experience in health care and education, preparing them for new careers in higher education and adult basic education.
The training program, to be delivered in a hybrid format (classes taught online and in the classroom), will focus on instructional technology, adult learning theory, course development and classroom management.
Atlantic Cape’s program will prepare participants to be teachers of health professions, English as a second language (ESL), and other in-demand subject areas.
