CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Chamber President Vicki Clark will testify before the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Thursday, Jan. 7 as to the negative impact Senate Bill 3169/Assembly Bill 4772 will have on our tourism industry and specifically to the hotel/motel/B&B lodging sector. Clark previously testified in December at a Senate committee hearing.
S3169/A4772 was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg of Bergen County and announced by Senate President Steve Sweeney. This bill, if passed by the NJ Legislature, would permit county governments to impose a 1% tax on all hotel, motel and bed and breakfast room rentals.
The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce is opposed to this bill and believes that if passed, it would be harmful to our tourism driven economy and create an unreasonable hardship for this segment of the lodging industry. Additionally, this would impose an additional tax on NJ residents that vacation in their home state. New Jersey visitors represent the largest visitor group to Cape May County tourism destinations.
The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce recently alerted its member businesses of proposed legislation that would allow county governments to impose a 1% tax on hotel and motel rooms.
