CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women is joining forces with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to help raise funds to ensure area girls can attend the Women’s Leadership Conference 2016. The breakfast celebrates “Women’s History Month” and will be held on Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.
The cost is $25 per person and proceeds will go toward scholarships to help offset expenses for teenage girls to attend classes sponsored by the AAUW. Classes available for young women as part of the Women’s Leadership Conference 2016 will include science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), once considered traditional male dominated occupations. The focus of the conference is to encourage teenage girls to consider career paths in those areas of study.
The AAUW conducts several one-day classes throughout the year and a weeklong class during the summer months. The classes are held at Richard Stockton University in Galloway Township. The purpose of the conference is to help young women develop the confidence to compete in the workforce, grow leadership skills and effectively navigate life and business careers.
The guest speaker at the 2016 Women’s Leadership Conference is Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, a former Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and the District of New Jersey. First elected in 2009, Guadagno, the first Lieutenant Governor in New Jersey, is currently serving her second term in office. Guadagno also serves as New Jersey Secretary of State.
The breakfast event is hosted by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders. E. Marie Hayes, Freeholder liaison of the Commission on the Status of Women will welcome guests. Hayes is a former Detective with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, retired in 2009 as Captain of Detectives, and has served as Cape May County Freeholder since February 2013.
