Charlie Ellner of Cape May is the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) Volunteer of the Month for April 2017. Charlie is a veteran of World War II and has consistently volunteered his time at the World War II Lookout Tower on Sunset Boulevard, one of Cape May’s historic sites. He often shares his story with visitors to the Tower. Recently, he spearheaded a campaign to give a memento to veterans – a “Thank You for Your Service” campaign. Shown here, Charlie holds the memento given to any veteran who visits the Tower. It consists of a small package with a card that says “Thank You For Your Service” and contains an actual star cut from a worn American flag that once flew over a home in the United States, but which can no longer fly due to its worn condition. “Let it be a reminder that your service to your country has not been forgotten,” the card reads. “Keep it in your pocket and every day know that we remember your sacrifice.”
Charlie was nominated by Anna Marie Leeper, assistant to MAC Director Michael Zuckerman. “We appreciate how dedicated Charlie is to his fellow veterans and we thought his idea to provide them with this memento for their visit to the World War II Lookout Tower was a wonderful idea,” she said. “We so much appreciate MAC volunteers like Charlie and their service to our country.”
The Volunteer of the Month award is given to a person who demonstrates a high degree of dedication, commitment and constancy to MAC’s volunteer program.
