CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Cape Regional Health System will open a new, state-of-the-art Concussion Care Center on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015. The Concussion Care Center is located within the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department on the first floor of the Medical Center. The public is invited to an Informational Session and Open House on one of two evenings:
• Wednesday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.
o 5 p.m. – Informational Session – Classrooms A & B
o 6 p.m. – Tour of Concussion Care Center
• Thursday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m.
o 4 p.m. – Informational Session – Classrooms A & B
o 5 p.m. – Tour of Concussion Care Center
This is the perfect opportunity to meet the Concussion Care Center Team and participate in a one-hour question-and-answer session followed by a tour of the new Center. During the tour, guests will be given a demonstration of the technology that will be used to diagnose and treat patients with concussions – the Dynavision (D2) is the latest and most sophisticated piece of equipment which addresses cognitive and motor deficits that occur from the result of a concussion. The Center also offers the Biodex Balance System which addresses both balance and vestibular deficits that may occur from the result of a concussion.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when a person receives a blow to the head, neck or upper body causing the brain to “rattle or shake” inside the skull. The “rattling or shaking” against the hard structure of the skull can cause neurological damage. If the impact is significant enough, or if a person sustains multiple concussions before the brain fully heals, the damage can be permanent.
“The Rehabilitation Team at Cape Regional Medical Center recognizes the need to develop a comprehensive program within our community to meet the needs of this growing concern. The Rehabilitation Team has spent the last year attending a weekly lecture series focused on the evaluation and treatment of concussion under the guidance of Dr. George Zitnay,” stated A.J. Weiss, Manager of Occupational Therapy at Cape Regional Health System. “The team at Cape Regional is committed to providing the highest quality and comprehensive care to those suffering with concussion symptoms in order to maximize recovery,” Weiss continued.
Dr. George Zitnay is a nationally-renowned pioneer in the field of concussions and traumatic brain injury. He was instrumental in developing concussion protocols for the NFL and the military, as well as serving on several boards and teaching at various prestigious universities in the field of traumatic brain injury. Dr. Zitnay has been vital in training and providing the Rehabilitation Team with the necessary tools needed to perform skilled evaluations and treatments necessary in the recovery of concussions.
The Concussion Care Center has recently completed construction on a 1,500 square foot location which provides those seeking treatment for a concussion with a private, quiet, distraction-free area which allows for maximal recovery.
